Dionysus and Ariadne have been on my mind a lot lately so today I started working on some research and prewriting for the rest of their story. There's quite a lot left to tell, I have to say.
But I have two main problems that I'm encountering. One, okay, say that the all-powerful Greek gods wanted to take out a human. You know, under the radar, basically assassination. Would they do it themselves? Or, if they didn't, who would they send? Am I allowed to make up a character for that? Haha if I AM, that'll be hawt. If I'm not, I really need to find this assassin of the gods. Two, I have no idea who Perseus is. I mean, I know who he is as in who his father is and what he did and all that....but personality-wise, no clue. It's also going to be a challenge to make him a decent chap without making Dionysus a jerk. I mean, we all know he is a jerk, but he can't be too much of one. So yeah. Perseus will be hard.
But otherwise, I'm looking forward to getting back into that story. There's a lot of good stuff to come. And who knows, maybe Adrastus will make an appearance.

Doesn't Zeus usually, like, zap them or summat? Or Hades or Hermes gets them, I think...
Hmmm but what if it was someone who was trying to go behind Zeus' back? Hera, for example, seems to like transforming Zeus' girlfriends into animals, echoes, etc.
Well, I guess the obvious choice then would be to use Ares, since he's never seemed to be picky about who he killed. Then again, he's kinda annoying, and he tends to kill off people in battle, so he may not fit. It might be more interesting to use Hermes, who you never think of being the assassin type, but really has done his fair share of offing... that'd be an interesting development. Hades has that kinda aura of darkness, power, and the unavoidable that has the potential to be awesome, but using him as a sort of super Grim Reaper kinda turns him into just another symbol for death, as opposed to a real assassin character. Plus he just seems, I dunno, too important and high on the ladder to take on assassin jobs.
OTOH, if you're not a myth purist, you could always take someone like Charon and vamp them up... 'cept I'm already using Charon, so you can't have him, heh heh heh. Whoa... actually, if you went with the winged-demon-with-a-hammer look for him, Charon would be totally awesome as the assassin. OK, fine, you can use him.

Whee! I WUV Hermes! Not Ares, I hate him. He's such a whiny baby. Or you could make up a hawt assassin character, cause your characters that kill people are cool to the extreme usually. I applaud the sequel already. *bounces she's so excited* I still think you should send in Hell Hath No Furies to an editor, just for kicks.

Um, knowing very little to nothing about the Greek gods, I think you should write an assassin. Because I agree with Kendra; it would be hawt. *grins widely*
But I guess this means Missing Door is shelved for the time being? I just have to say, having lots of experience with growing to hate a story and ditching it, that they're not all bad. Yes, I have had plenty where I read an old story and seriously questioned my sanity, and then I also have found a few which have oodles of potential. I mean, yesterday I read one little thing I scribbled the first two scenes of, and now I have in my head a sequel to the story I'm doing after I'm done with DNL and Merchant's Daughter. Sigh. The stories never come to an end, do they. :D
And regarding the writing of your loverly sequel, you don't HAVE to wait for November, you know. :D

Medusa: nothing is being shelved permanently. I'm not actually *writing* anything at all at the moment, because I'm a loser and The Missing Door did something to me, I'm not sure what. I like all the stories I have in various states of finished/unfinished. :P Hopefully they'll all get somewhat done.
I'm not sure WHICH one I'm going to be working on because I'm completely incapable of creative thought just now. When I do start writing again, you guys will be the first to know.

Upping, beefing... y'know. Taking a vague character and expanding him into something awesome.
Go ahead. Smack him. Well, let's see...assassin characters are awesome, as a general rule, and your chars that kill people are also awesome. THat Jedi chick was awesome, as was that guy in your battle thing (I'm really bad with names today. Was it a tree of some sort?) Oh! And also, Dionysus totally coulda been an assassin if he wanted to. He had a good attitude. I guess I wasn't thinking of any specific character, I just think you'd be totally cool at it. Cause you're a l33t wr1t3r as well as being a volcanoe.

Because sobriety tends to be a necessity for assassins, I don't think Dionysus would fit the part.
I'm not against making up your own characters in the context of most bodies of pre-existing stories (like Star Wars! Yay!), but with myth, particularly Greek and Roman, you gotta at least give your character the NAME of a classical figure, even if you change the personality, appearance, and function entirely. It's just too weighty a tradition to which to go adding something completely new out of the blue.
Yeah I think I agree with you, Zack. Amazingly, enough. ;) But I still don't know who I'll use. I can't use Dionysus, lol, cuz Ariadne is the human in the line of fire here, and I don't remember him ever trying to knock her off. It would also destroy my plot.
Ah. See, I went back and read your post about the plot, and now everything makes sense. Though I also don't remember the gods trying to off Ariadne. ;) I love new spins on myths.
