I just want to send this cosmic question out into the void. So, goodnight dear void.

So I've been wanting to read Robin McKinley and Patricia A. McKillip for a while now. Does anyone have suggestions for what book of theirs to START with??? Too many options!

Hmm. I am a huge McKinley fan...so this is a tough question indeed! For younger readers I recommend Beauty, but for everyone else I think either Deerskin or The Blue Sword would be good starting places.

Happy reading!

I agree, Beauty or The Blue Sword are good starting spots for McKinley.

For McKillip...hm. I'd say The Changeling Sea. It is very short, but it's lovely and fun and classic McKillip style. A bite-size piece, really, to see if one will appreciate longer offerings.

(plus Lyo is awesome. Just throwing that out there.)

If you can't get hold of The Changeling Sea...let's see, Song for the Basilisk is my personal favorite of McKillip's novels, but I dunno if it's a good spot to start. I remember the first book of hers that really clicked for me was The Tower at Stony Wood. OH! Or the Cygnet books--there's an omnibus that's just called Cygnet, but the two books that make it up are The Sorceress and the Cygnet and The Cygnet and the Firebird. (Actually, if they're separate, I might suggest reading Firebird first...one, the firebird's awesome. Second, so is Rad Ilex. I LIKE MORALLY QUESTIONABLE MAGES, WHAT. *cough*)

Thank you, Diana and Sparky!

(and morally ambiguous mages make the world go round, let's face it)
